Homework (Essay)

^^*Question : It is often said that you should never judge another person until you walk in their shoes. Is this true? Why or why not, and use good, well-reasoned examples.

I agree with the topic because I cannot judge people before I know them. For example, before I tell I am Korean to people, they can think I am Chinese or Japanese. That means although you judge people, your judgement can be wrong.

Most of people judge by appearance. That is the truth the first thoughts are based on appearance. However, before you try to get to know them, you cannot judge anything about them. For example, my grandfather looks scary because of his big eyes, but actually he is nice because he likes to take care of plants. Also, he harvests vegetables and fruits for us at the front garden of the house.

You might hurt people feelings. If you blame a fat person, the person gets hurt because you do not know how the person tries to lose weight and what the person eats for diet. You can never realize his or her efforts. For example, before I had Mr. Serbeniuk's class, I heard from my friend he was a boring teacher. However, after I took his class, I realized he was a good teacher.

You do not know wha the person is going through or where they are coming from. Also, you do not know their background. You cannot know they have problems with their family or a person gets a F on the test, so he or she feels bad about it. You never know before you have conversations with them. Also, you cannot judge the people by your thoughts and feelings.

Do not judge people. Do not forget if you judge people by appearance or your thoughts, they can judge you by appearance or their thoughts. Respect for people. Although you judge people, nothing is good for you. Also, treat people without your judgement. This really important becuase it can affect your society.

Homework

I don't know who is my neighbor. I think most of people don't know their neighborhood. My grandmother told me 10 years ago, when people were passing by our house, they certainly say "Hi". These days, no one doesn't say "Hi". I think people are gradually going to be selfish. I can be selfish too. No one does not realize he or she is selfish. My neighborhood is really quiet, so there is no an accident near my neighborhood. I know it is really nice, but is it really nice???? If we know each other, we can make our place better. Also, we can talk about problems.

What is an American?

Before I came to United States, I did not know anything about this country even though who was the first president in this country. I heard the word "United States" when I was taking ESL becuase we read the text book of ESL which was almost about American culture or immigration. I could see and hear the word although I did not want to see and hear it. People do not call this country as America becuase there are South America and North America, so this country is called as United States. Also, people who live in this country are called as Untied States citizens.
Korea, Japan, and China are called as Asia countries, so I think it is same thing with this country. That means this country is just one of America countries.

People come to this country from other countires to get a better life.I thought only white people lived in this country. However, when I arrived in LA, I could see many people who had differnet skin colors. There are many latin people in my school. Although they are born in this country, they have their own culture except American culture. I think they are affected from their parents. I think it is good because before I came to this country, I did not even know Mexico is,but I could get informations which are about Mexico from my friends.

Namely, although we have different culture, we can share informations and talk about experiences in English. I think the language makes us together. If I think what "United States" means, I can tell the word means different states make together.

Stream of Consciousness

My name is Younji. I am 16 years old. I came to United States as a trip because I got good grades when I was 8th grade, so my parents wanted me to travel before I went to high school. My parents and I knew that If I was a high school student in Korea, I would not have time to travel because I would go to school from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. Most of Korean high school students only focus on their education, so they study hard every single day.

I was so excited because I went to Disney Land, Universal Studio, Las Vegas, and Notts with my relatives, so I liked the American culture because people look peaceful and comfortable. Also, I had new experiences. I was having great time, and I felt I wanted to stady here gradually. I envyed people who although their race is Korean, they can speak English and Korean. For example, my couisn came to this country when she was 5th grade, so she can speak Korean and English naturally. She looked great.

I asked my parents about living in this country with my relatives. They okayed my decision. After they discussed with my uncle about my future, I prepared for going to high school with my uncle. I had to choose between Los Angeles High School and West Adams Prep High School. I chose West Adams Prep High School because there were many Korean students in L.A.H.S, so I knew if I went there, I would not try to speak English.

I could not used to be in school and home. I did not feel comfortable anywhere. I wa so depressed when I was 9th grade because I could not have friends and I was alone in the classes. That reason is that I could not understand and speak English. That time, I wanted to go back to Korea. I knew everything needed English when I did homework, read a book, etc, but English was more difficult than I thought.

Anyway, I am studying hard these days because I came here to study, and I want to go to college. This year is very busy because I should start to prepare for SAT and ACT, and I should do the service worker. My goal is to go to UCSD, so I need to get good scores on SAT. Also, I will do my best in this class. I am glad that I have Ms. Erudite's class again, and I thank her let me take her class in the semester.
